Frequently Asked Questions

K-Line Questions

Q:  "I have a new K3s.  Which book is best for me?"
A:  You will want The Elecraft K3s and P3 -- Getting the Most from Your High Performance Station.

Q:  "I have a K3 and a copy of your K3 book.  I'm wondering about upgrading the K3 with K3s components."
A:  Upgrading the Elecraft K3 with K3s Components -- Bridging the Gap will help answer those questions and serve as an adjunct for the K3 book showing how to use the KIO3B and KXV3B.
You can also consider The Elecraft K3 and P3, 3rd Edition -- Incorporating the KXV3B and KIO3B, which combines the 2nd edition K3 book with KIO3B and KXV3B information.

Q:  "I have a K3 and a copy of your K3 book.  I'm definitely planning to upgrade my K3 with K3s components."
A:  Upgrading the Elecraft K3 with K3s Components -- Bridging the Gap will serve you but if you want the material all in one place, you might consider The Elecraft K3 and P3, 3rd Edition -- Incorporating the KXV3B and KIO3B or
The Elecraft K3s and P3 -- Getting the Most from Your High Performance Station.

Q:  "I just bought a used K3 and don't have any of your books."
A:  The Elecraft K3 and P3, 3rd. Edition -- Incorporating the KXV3B and KIO3B will be very helpful in learning about this marvelous K3 radio.

Q:  "Should I use the downloadable pdf version or use a printed, spiral coil bound book?"
A:  That depends on how you are most comfortable with using a workbook.  The KE7X books in hardcopy form are spiral bound so that they will lie flat on your desk.  There are large margins for handwritten notes, too.

For some, however, the downloadable version of the book allows you to use a Search facility to find words and phrases quickly without having to use an Index or Table of Contents.  Plus the downloadable version can be used with a table or smartphone for quick reference no matter where you are.

Q:  "I am new to Elecraft products.  Will the K3s book help me  understand what options are right for me?"
A:  Yes.  The first two chapters are an excellent way to get started with your new radio.  The chapters cover all of the options, explain what they do and how they work.  Then, once you receive your properly configured K3s you'll have the rest of the book to enjoy learning about it.

Q:  "What is the difference between your books and the Elecraft Owner's manuals?"
A:  The KX3, K3 and K3s Owner's Manuals that come with the radios describe each and every feature and how it is to be set up.  Unlike the KE7X books, however, they assume that you know about the feature and how it is intended to be applied in everyday use.

The KE7X books, on the other hand, will step through the operating features describing their theory of operation and their intended use.  Then, in later chapters KE7X builds on them by describing how to apply the features in CW, Phone and Digital modes to obtain the desired operating results.

Also, unlike the Owner's Manuals, all books use exercises to reinforce learning and operating skills.

Q:  "I'd like to learn more about how the Elecraft radios do their magic.  Will your books help me with that?"
A:  Each of the books show the general architecture of the radio in block diagram form to explain how the signals flow and we show schematic diagrams of input and output circuits.  Much of the magic, though, is in the Elecraft-developed firmware, which is constantly being refined and improved.  While we are not able to offer the details of firmware implementation, we can describe how different features work and how we can affect the features with our adjustments.

Q:  "I am adding the KAT500 and KPA500 to my station."
A:  The Elecraft KPA500 Amplifier and KAT500 Tuner will allow you to connect and efficiently use your K-Line Dream Station.  You can also download a free K-Line Set UP and Installation Guide and an KAT500 and KXPA100 Tuner Operation guide.
